CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Opponents of abortion are hoping to end their five-year losing streak at the state Capitol with the help of ultrasound.

A measure to be introduced in the upcoming week would require abortion providers to give patients the opportunity to view an ultrasound image of their fetus any time the procedure is required by the medical standard of care.

Abortion foes haven't had a legislative success since 2005. Groups like West Virginians for Life believe the ultrasound bill has a good chance of passing.

WV FREE, which supports abortion rights, argues that the measure would interfere with a private medical decision and wants to see it rejected.

Both sides are wondering how a recent change in leadership at the House Judiciary Committee will affect the legislation.

35 years ago, if I had been made to have an ultrasound, I would not aborted a baby. I was scared, had no support, no one to talk to, no way to support a baby, didn't think it would affect me if I had an abortion. Yes I knew about sex, but at 17 I just knew it wouldn't happen to me! It did and the father said he wasn't ready for a baby. I'll never forget that day and the horrible suction sound of the removal of a life. I have forgiven myself and the father. Every year in the month my baby would have been born, I wonder, boy or girl, what would it have become? It's in my past, but for all the young girls out there, it can happen to you. Have the ultrasound and see the baby! So many good marriages cannot produce a baby. Let adoption help you and your child.

@wonder Yes. I can tell you the difference. The majority of abortions are done before the fetus is 8 weeks old. At 8 weeks the fetus is in no way a being in and of its self as an infant is. Were I to show you the collection of cells that is an 8 week old fetus you would not be able to identify it. To all of you that say put these infants up for adoption... It really doesnt work that way. The mother wants an abortion but after you beat her in the head with your book of fairy-tales(the bible) she has the baby. She is of course attached to the infant and keeps it. Now she cant/wont etc take care of it and the child winds up in foster care. Where are you "good" christians then? Why are their so many children in faster care/abusive homes etc if you and your brethren are all so ready to take them. Practice what you preach. In my opinion, the state should pull all churches tax exempt status and put it toward sex education in our schools and a better foster care system.
