HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Huntington Mayor Kim Wolfe is proposing a move that would mean police officers would have to pull double duty

In his State of the City address Saturday, Wolfe said rather than laying off police officers he could save money by giving pink slips to the department's clerical staff, meaning police officers would pick up where secretaries left off.

"This was a swift kick in the gut to know there's a potential we'll have to reduce font line staff to keep the police department running just at an efficient rate," said Police Chief Skip Holbrook.

Right now this is simply a proposal. Mayor Wolfe says he's optimistic that it won't have to happen, he says it's a, "worst case scenario."

"The biggest issue is always protecting citizens, part of the government is protecting citizens," Mayor Wolfe said.

Holbrook said he isn't happy to take officers off the street, but that he supports Mayor Wolfe's decision.

As for those folks named on the unpaid municipal fee list, Mayor Wolfe issued a warning. He says the City will turn those names into a collection agency and even put liens on properties in an effort to collect the money.

I have read most of these notes and letters. It is sad.Things never change.People are people and they are all a like. They get married have children and buy a home and hope that things will be great.Welcome to the world.People here in Huntington aren't doing well financially.Yeah they owe money for trash and other things. What are you going to do? Go ahead put liens on theirs homes. They can't do anything if they don't have the money. You already put their names in the paper. You know they are already hurting, so what is one more hurtful thing published about them.Go ahead and kicked them when they are down. Most have no job or little pay, maybe wife or husband real sick?Don't judge them City Counsil or whom ever decided to publish this story. As for the police, they don't do nothing but give out tickets to those who they know can't pay in my opionion?Let theives go who attack women who steal purses. They sit behind their desk laughing with pot bellies.Get a life.Help them find a way to pay. ok

Please post the average Huntington police salary. Not starting pay but average. Include all the desk jobs and police chief. I think the average person would be suprised at how high their pay is.
