ASHLAND, Ky (WSAZ) -- The men and women who protect us everyday were given a big thank you Saturday evening.

After 125 years of service, firefighters with the Ashland Fire Department said thank you to each other for a job well done.

The fire department held an invitation-only banquet Saturday at the Plaza Hotel in Ashland. Veterans, rookies and retirees were all in attendance.

The fire chief says the banquet wasn't just about the experienced firefighters -- it's an opportunity to teach each other the ropes.

The ladies of the fire department's auxiliary wing hope to make this event an annual fundraiser.

We celebrated our history as a proud dept, serving our community to the best of our ability. (All local fire chiefs were invited to celebrate with us) There was never any "intention" to slam or say that we are better than any volunteer dept. You do what you do to protect your citizens just as we do. The only thing that makes us different from volunteers is that we get paid to do what we love. If you would like to join us, I am sure that we will be hiring in a few years.

Please dont turn this into professional vs volunteer.Westwood celebrated 60 yrs a few months ago and should be proud of their accomplishments. This was simply a celebration of the history of AFD and 125yrs of service, not a slam at volunteers or training. And I believe any discussion between a rookie and a seasoned, veteran firefighter, even though retired, could be invaluable at some point in that young firefighters career. There is more to gain than just table manners. Be proud of all your departments, and its firefighters (vol or pro). They serve your community.

Great job guys, however, how does the banquet teach the younger guys the ropes? Unless you are teaching them table manners!
