CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The waves of winter storms have combined with the ongoing legislative session and the election season to produce a flurry of political activity.

Senate Transportation and Infrastructure Chair John Unger, a Berkeley County Democrat, plans to hold a hearing Tuesday on how officials prepared for and responded to the severe weather that dumped 52 inches of snow on the Eastern Panhandle.

Senate Majority Leader Truman Chafin is pressing for a review into the lengthy and widespread power outages caused in his native Mingo County and elsewhere by December's storm.

House Speaker Rick Thompson wants Governor Joe Manchin to tap the state's emergency reserves. The Wayne County lawmaker says mounting snow removal costs will otherwise sap local and county government budgets.
