IRONTON, Ohio (WSAZ) -- These days, a college diploma is almost a must to get a good job.
Paying for that diploma, though, isn't always easy.
To help ease the strain on wallets, a program called College Goal Sunday set up shop at Ohio University Southern in Ironton Sunday.
The goal is to help students and parents get the cash they need to attend college. The way to to that is completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.
The FAFSA is the federal application that is required to receive federal financial aid, like the Federal Pell Grand and student loans as well as need-based state grants.
"People make a lot of mistakes on the form when they're trying to complete it on their own," the OUS Financial Aid Coordinator Jacki Adkins said. "At this event we have our professionals here to help them complete it and go through the application and try to keep from making those mistakes that sometimes either keep them from getting aid or delay the processing of their financial aid."
The organization says students are 50% more likely to attend college with a completed FAFSA.
FAFSA forms must be turned in by midnight on July 30th, but students should check deadlines at their specific campus because they may be sooner.
Next Sunday, February 21, another meeting will be held in Huntington at the Marshall Career and Technical Center.
Scott Robertson is in charge of the meeting at MCTC.
"We want to make sure that as many students in West Virginia are aware of the opportunity to obtain free money for college," he said.

FAFSA does not take into account that someone who has a business can & does write off all living expenses on taxes to show NO personal INCOME thus qualifying for PELL GRANT $$$$$. Something is very wrong with this system. We had 2 jobs last year, but just one job this year and get no help... while I know others who have more but the numbers game shows little income so their kid/s get more help. I called and talked to our college financial aid person and it's true.
FAFSA only takes into account a family's income, and does not consider expenses. I have two children in college and on my $70K salary (before taxes), we didn't qualify for any financial aid. I have a mortgage, car payment, health insurance, and not to mention feeding and clothing two teens. I don't have savings to send them both to college, I am unprepared and didn't think there wouldn't be federal money for their college. We are far from rich, and I was honest on the forms, but that didn't help us a bit.
FAFSA funds (PELL GRANTS) from the federal government are FREE funds to further your education. While filling for fasfa funds you also can accept/or decline Federal Stafford Loans that will be paid back.
