CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Although it may be a headache for some motorists, the construction and detour on Kanawha Boulevard will be well worth it when Memorial Day Weekend arrives in May.

At Haddad Park just off the boulevard in Charleston, construction equipment and orange barrels line the road. A giant concrete slab and wall are part of the superstructure that's going to arch down to the stage by the river.

A canopy will rest over top of the structure and provide lots of shade during the warm summer months.

But with all of this winter weather, it's caused city officials to push back the construction, meaning the closing won't happen until Feb. 22.

"With the forecast this week, it's going to be too cold to really do anything of substance here on the boulevard," Assistant Mayor Rod Blackstone said. "So instead of just having the boulevard closed and nothing being able to happen, we decided to postpone it for a week. We still think we're on schedule, the contractors still say they can do what we want them to do."

City officials say, in order to put that superstructure in, it will take the work of a giant crane. When the riverfront park is finished, however, they believe it will be an enduring symbol of Charleston.
