HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Huntington Police Explorers Program offers high school students a chance to see life as a cop.
The program currently has 22 students from several schools in Cabell and Wayne counties. The kids put in, all told, 60 hours of classroom work, but it isn't all boring.
The group recently got together with Huntington's S.W.A.T Team to see some tactical police work in action.
To get in the program, students must have good grades, strong character and pass a background check.

I wish some of the older population could spend time in this program. Maybe then they wouldn't be so quick to put down officers.

OUTSTANDING program!!! My son's priority is to become a Huntington Police officer. His love of the program keeps his mind on task (school) alot better than it has ever been!! Every training day with the Explorers is the talk at our dinner table and he wished it happened every week!!I am VERY THANKFUL for Kendra Beckett for getting the program started again. And for all of the Huntington Police Officers for taking your time to Help with the Explorers program.I really think if more parents would get there kids involed they would really understand that HPD has alot of great officers that really do care for Huntington!!"Mind over matter" will carry you a long way in life...KEEP UP THE PROGRAM OUR KIDS NEED IT!!

Why not average grades for this program? Those who make excellent grades possibly will pursue another path? The pay isn't all that to those students. We need annual Careers Days at the Big Sandy for 10TH graders and older and their parents from all schools in the viewing area at least. We need to secure all students into a dream.
