HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Last year the Associated Press said Huntington was the fattest city in the country. Now a new survey conducted by the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index ranks the Huntington-Ashland area dead last for overall well-being.

Out of 162 areas surveyed around the country, the Tri-State region came in last.

"Last year we were the fattest, now we're the saddest," Huntington Mayor Kim Wolfe said. "We'll get through it."

"It's a shame that we have to keep battling this same misperception," Tyson Compton with the Cabell Huntington Visitors Bureau said.

This news was brought to light Monday by USA Today. The report shows that folks in this region are have some of the worst emotional health of anyone in the country. Compton doesn't buy it.

"That we are the saddest, unhealthiest people in the country -- I would wholeheartedly disagree with," he said.

Wolfe said that crime is down in Huntington, and unemployment isn't that bad comparatively. He said when you're at the bottom, there's no where else to go but up.

"We'll make lemonade out of it," Wolfe said.

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones said this report is disheartening to him, too, but he's optimistic.

"They are not in touch with the people," he said. "I am. They haven't been to Appalachian Power part to see a Power Game -- I think Charleston's better days are still ahead."

Nearly 353,000 people around the country were surveyed at random for the study.
