There are 75 miners without a job as of Wednesday after a Raleigh County mine suddenly shut down.

A spokesperson said Peachtree Ridge Mining notified MSHA yesterday about closing the Eagle Number One Mine.

State inspectors have issued 75 citations against the mine in the first half of this year. MSHA has also warned the company it may face sanctions for being a repeat offender.

You know, it's amazing to me that these people are able to still obtain business licenses! The men finally were paid 1/2 today of what is owed, but they had to wait hours for anyone who would cash them, because every local bank was trying to get through to their bank making sure the money was there! RIDICULOUS!

This same owner pulled the same tricks over at the old Ranger No. 2 in 2004. He couldn't even pay the the electricity bill to keep the fan running but he lived in a mansion in California. Unemployment wasnt payed either. The coal business is not bad and all the coal could be shipped. Guess he had to go buy a yacht or something.

My husband was employed at PeachTree Ridge Mining. He is owed for 2 wks pay. Just like the other workers, we have no idea when they will get paid. I also heard that the company has filed bankrupency. We worked for this money, and we should get what is owed to us. But i guess the owers don't think so, but in long end they wished they had....

I am the wife of a miner that was one of the 75. These 75 men are were not only put out of a job, they also were severed without pay. Their unemployment won't pick up until the end of the month and they haven't received their pay for 2 weeks prior to vacation nor vacation week and after. (Last payday was received June 22, 2007) These men have questions that are being refused by unanswered telephones and returned certified mail. The company gave no warning of closing. They had the miners work 10 hour shifts prior to their vacation week as opposed to their regular 8 hour shifts. They were off for a week for vacation and on Monday we received a voice mail message that said, "This is **** from Peachtree Ridge Mining. I am calling to inform you that you have officially been laid off. The mine is closed. Be here before 5 pm to remove your personal items from your locker or they will be trashed." Like I said this was after vacation where a lot of these men spent most of their previous paychecks taking their families away. They return on Friday to security guards telling them that the paychecks were lost in the mail. On Saturday they were told that FedEx was doing a search for the "package" in their system and they would have their money on Monday. Monday came with the aforementioned message. As my husband was driving approximately 45 minutes to go pick up his personal belongings he spots two men hiking up "Bolt Mt". These two men were also employees of Peachtree and were hiking because they didn't even have enough money to put gas in their vehicles to be able to drive over and pick up their personal belongings! Ridiculous! This is the whole story on this situation. Not just the cut and dry of "Oh, it closed". It's not as simple as that. This not only put 75 men out of work, it put 75 FAMILIES on hold for what is an undetermined amount of time. No answers, no money, and no jobs.

  • Idea of gas-tax holiday dies quick death

A gas price sign is shown in McKinney, Texas, Friday, July 18, 2008. Prices at the pump backed away from record highs as oil futures edged up Friday, but crude's gains were modest in comparison to the spectacular three-day drop earlier in the week. The political vision of a summer gas tax holiday died a quick death in Congress, losing to a view that federal excise taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel will have to go up if they go anywhere.
