CHARLESTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Patients with early onset Alzheimer's disease are now on a fast track for Social Security disability benefits.

The Social Security Administration plans to add early Alzheimer's to a growing list of disabilities and diseases, which qualifies for its Compassionate Allowances Program. This means its goal is to streamline the process to get benefits to patients as quickly as possible.

This is the first expansion since the original list of 50 conditions -- 25 rare diseases and 25 cancers -- was announced in October 2008. Social Security will begin electronically identifying these 38 new conditions March 1, 2010.

JOAN, I toatlly agree. That was the issue with my wife. Altho she had more than enough credits from steady employment for almost 30 years, she had not worked the required number of quarters in the 5 years leading to her aplication for disability. Even tho the lack of work was related to her final diagnosis she did not qualify. We appealed and were still turned down. Doesn't seem fair.

Soc Sec has very defined rules. These rules are different for those who apply for disability and those who apply for the retirement benefits. Unfortunately, soc sec does not advertise this fact. My son, who has Multiple Myeloma qualifies under the 'got the disease category' but although he paid in for many years and is eligible for retirement benefits, he does not have enough earnings paid into soc sec in the past five years to qualify. This is particularly disconcerting, when I see immigrants fresh off the plane march directly to the soc sec office and get SSI benefits. They can qualify even if they have never paid in...even if they have never paid into the social security system of the country from which they immigrated.
