BOYD COUNTY, KY (WSAZ-TV) -- When severe weather strikes, you had better believe Billy Moore is ready to hit the road. Moore is just one of many salt truck drivers across Kentucky working to keep the roads clear.
"It's definitely not as simple as folks think it is," Moore said.
Despite eight years of experience, Moore admits driving in these conditions can be worrisome.
"It's still scary everyday," Moore said.
But there's something else besides the snow and ice that worries drivers behind the wheel of those massive vehicles. They are also worried about drivers who are not paying attention.
"They're out there working for the public to get the roads clear," Kentucky Department of Transportation spokesman Allen Blair said. "We would appreciate any help the public can give us. The best way is to slow down and keep your distance."
Drivers say they just want folks to keep an eye out for their vehicles as they work to clear the roads.
"Were trying to clear the road for them so they can get to where they're going," Moore said. "But they're not thinking about us in the truck and they're not really taking themselves into consideration."
Kentucky has already witnessed several accidents between cars and salt trucks. Officials say it's all because drivers are in too much of a hurry.
"We all get into the rush," Blair said. "We're always wanting to be somewhere as quickly as possible, and we wait until the last minute to leave. Some of our best advice is to leave early to arrive on your destination on time. Give yourself some time so you don't have to go fast."
