Annexation of Dunbar and Institute Possible Soon
Much of Institute, W.Va., could soon become part of the city of Dunbar if a new proposal continues to move forward.

KANAWHA COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Much of Institute, W.Va.,could soon become part of the city of Dunbar if a new proposal continues to move forward.
The city wants to annex much of the unincorporated part of Institute into the city.
Dunbar Mayor Jack Yeager says the annexation would bring zoning, better fire and police protection and road maintenance to the area.
Shawnee Park and West Virginia State University would be absorbed into the city if the plan is approved. The Kanawha County Commission plans to take up the topic at Thursday's meeting.
It is expected the commission will have the Regional Intergovernmental Council to study the feasibility of the plan. Yeager says this project should have been done a long time ago.
A similar plan to annex Institute into the city of Dunbar failed in 2004 because several businesses in the area came out against the plan. Community leaders say they expect more support for the plan this time.
