CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., spoke out Wednesday about some comments he made in a Senate Finance Committee meeting when it came to the White House budget and clean coal.
"He (Obama) says 'I'm for clean coal,' and then he says it in his speeches, but he doesn't say it in here," Rockefeller said. "And he doesn't say it in the minds of my own people. And he's beginning to not be believable to me."
They are tough words from a serious supporter of the President, and even candidate Obama during his presidential bid.
"There are 500 things he is responsible for, and most of them I agree with," Rockefeller said.
The West Virginia press in particular says Rockefeller is splitting from Obama, but Rockefeller says that's not the case.
"So far, based on next year's budget ... I see some things I don't like," Rockefeller says. "So it's my responsibility to say that."
Rockefeller doesn't believe enough funding is going to support clean coal technology and research.
"Coal is not clean, but it can be made clean," he says. "We've seen it in West Virginia."
Rockefeller referred to the carbon capture and sequestration process that is already happening at American Electric Power's Mountaineer Plant in New Haven, which is in Mason County.
Rockefeller's statement about nuclear power comes the same week as President Obama guaranteed federal money to build and restore nuclear plants. The Senator doesn't feel the President is allocating enough money for clean coal.
"It's the question of giving us time to do it, putting up the money to do it," Rockefeller says. "Because once you get a system going that Wall Street believes, in, they will fund you til you have money rolling out of your ears."
Rockefeller was in Charleston on Wednesday to speak at a health care rally.

Wasn't this the left wing Zealot who was one of the first senators to endorse DRAMA-OBAMA? I agree, sweep out Washington and put in people who know what West Viginians are about. Sen. Rockefeller has never been a mountaineer. It is time to send him packing.
LET THE MINERS WORK. ROCKEFELLER NEEDS TO GO BACK IN THE OIL BUSINESS..
Rockefeller and Obama are for clean coal. Put the coal miners under the ground where they can get killed and where they breath coal dust. Why don't you talk about the reclaimed land they are using for a Boys Scout camp. It is beautiful. We don't need OUTSIDERS like Obama and Rokefeller to tell West Virginians how to mine coal. Clean coal is not so clean.
