CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- The cost of a beer in West Virginia would go up by at least 3 cents under a plan aimed at funding substance abuse programs.
The bill, discussed Wednesday in the Health and Human Resources Committee, would raise the tax on beer from $5.50 per barrel to $19.25.
That translates to an increase on 12-ounce bottles and cans from 2 to 5 cents.
The measure would raise about $20 million. The money would be spent by a panel under the jurisdiction of the court system in the form of grants.
Delegate Don Perdue, D-Wayne, says it's needed to address alcohol and drug abuse, but some lawmakers are wary of raising taxes.
A public hearing on the bill is scheduled for Monday.

OK MEL lol Whining about this and that doesn't change anything. Obama is our president and now we have to shell out 3 more cents for beer and so on and so on. Can we fight things we dont agree with sure in the right place at the right time and in the right way we can make a difference. But not everyone can have their way everytime. There is always someone who wont get their way deal with it and make the best out of what you have focusing on the negative cant be making your life any better. Also name calling is a good way to make sure no one takes what you have to say seriously learn to make your point with facts and without name calling.
nobody needs help to quit substance abuse.thats the biggest croc of bull i have ever heard of,i smoked for 28 years and quit, did not need anybodys tax dollars to do it. if they want to quit they could do it. it is a matter of wanting to. a lot of people go to these programs so they can get a free check,SSI DUH,GET ON DRUGS,DRINK BOOZE,TO LAZY TO WORK, GET A FREE CHECK!!!!!!!!!!
Dosen't matter about the tax on cigs.or beer. The people living along the state lines will cross over into that state to purchase it cheaper. Then WV will cry about the tax loss...DUH!!! I remember when the William S. Ritchie bridge was buit in Ravenswwod and the Ohio county of Meigs was dry, bumber to bumber good ole boys coming into the mountain state, party hardy Marty! The state could have made a small fortune if that was a toll bridge!
