CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A new plan is headed to the West Virginia Senate floor, in an effort for the state to take over the Dow Technology Park.

Right now, as State Code stands, the Higher Education Policy Commission and the Community and Technical College Boards must be in Charleston.

The new bill on the table says those entities can be located in a technology and research park.

Senator Brooks McCabe, D-Kanawha, says this is different than moving a state agency to the park because these two groups are not in the state constitution. This would simply change the law, providing the groundwork for the state to take over the donation of the technology park from Dow.

"South Charleston, Charleston, Kanawha County Putnam County, Cabell County, everyone benefits from having the Higher Education Policy Commission involved really, allows in a seamless way to bring both WVU and Marshall to the table," McCabe said. "Those are our two research universities and they need to be here. in one of the chemical centers in the state."

Charleston Mayor Danny Jones says city lawyers are taking a closer look at this latest proposal.

I would love to see our state leadership change the state charter to allow government to locate offices where it makes best sense for the state's taxpayers, not the city of Charleston.
