CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Five West Virginia volunteer fire departments are getting more than $322,000 from the federal government to buy equipment.
U.S. Sens. Robert C. Byrd and Jay Rockefeller announced the grants Wednesday.
They say the Walkersville Volunteer Fire Department is getting $72,885 and the Salt Rock Volunteer Fire Department is getting $76,380.
Another $49,638 goes to the Mt. Storm Volunteer Fire Department, while Logan County Volunteer Fire Department is getting almost $103,000 for its station in Man. Bluestone Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Spanishburg is receiving $20,425.
The senators say the grants are vital to maintaining safety.

No, this is NOT stimulus money. The is part of the Federal Fire Act Grant, it has been around annually for about ten years. Funded by Congress when it was discovered that the average age of fire engines in the US was about 20 years old and fire department infrastructure was collapsing. This has helped many departments in WV update equipment that was circa 1960's or 1970's. Supported by both democrats and republicans through multiple administrations. Hope that more of our WV departments get assistance. Dear Anonymous, if you don't like your local volunteer fire department, JOIN and help, don't complain because the 12 to 20 members of the community that are carrying your dead weight aren't working hard and fast enough to please you. Most communities of 10,000 residents or so have fire departments of about 30 members, leaving about 9,970 people to complain that those 30 people who care enough to try (for free)aren't carrying the weight of all 10,000 to their satisfaction.
The story didn't say-is this part of the Stimulus money intended to jump start the private sector economy?
Glad Whitesville FD isn't getting anything because they are a JOKE!
