HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- All of the extra snow days are starting to become a concern for some parents.

Some working parents are going to extremes to make sure their children receive care. The YMCA Daycare Center in Huntington came to the rescue for Olga Alnco, a mother of three.

"It's frustrating. Sometimes you don't know what to do," she says.

Alnco paid nearly $100 for last minute childcare due to the snow. Many working parents are finding it difficult to find childcare when snow shuts down school.

Christy Inskeep had no choice but to bring her to children to work with her for a few hours. The school's last minute decision to close affected her work routine.

"I was an hour and half late to work," she said. "Now I have to get caught up."

Another option to consider if your child needs supervision is the local boys and girls clubs in your area.

I do agree with Randy in KY. I am almost positive that most kids could get to school here in Huntington, but they close for basically nothing. Either bus drivers need to learn how to drive on the snow, or get smaller vehicles to pick kids up in because it snows every year. High schools want to get kids ready for "the real world." Well, the real world doesn't shut down when it's snowing.

I agree with C230 Why not have school all year? I realize the kids look forward to having the summer off & many families plan vacations in June and July; but let's get real. Here's a suggestion start the school year on Aug 1st (the football teams start practice in Aug. so why not start school). Take winter break from Dec 15th to Jan 15th; then in the spring from March 20th to April 9th (there's about 3 wks-and can be shorten if needed to make up time due to snow days) and then summer break could start mid-June which would make summer break 1 1/2 months; winter break 1 month and spring break about 3 wks. This is only a suggestion I don't claim to be an expert in education but this sounds reasonable to me.

WV could do like the Kentucky schools do, close when the first flake falls. Actually, I have a REAL problem with closing school for 6,000 students when less than 500 would really have a problem getting to school. They might think it is being fair, but you cannot be fair by hurting everyone's education, not to mention people's work schedules.
