HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The snow days were fun while they lasted, but now thousands of students are playing catch up after missing more than a week of classes -- and teachers are left trying to get students back on track.
Mrs. Novotny's science class at St. Joseph Grade School is trying to catch, but after a string of unscheduled days off students aren't as sharp as they were a week ago.
Mrs. Novotny anticipated the problem -- and tried to be prepared.
"I sent them things online, but no one checked," she said. "It's been a real concern with out students being out so many days."
Carol Templeton is the principal at St. Joseph Grade School. Her primary concern is academics, and with annual standardized testing right around the corner, it's crunch time.
"We only have three weeks to get in important objectives," Templeton said.
While students are getting a little extra play time, teachers are working double time to catch up. Teachers say they may have to streamline some subjects in order to devote the needed time to others before testing.

Citizen, did you ever notice the codes on the Cabell County school closings? When they show a code orange, that means that teachers go to school when the students don't. Furthermore, the ISE days are mandatory. Many students participated in the County Social Studies Fair which was held on the ISE day. This day gave them the time to do their presentations without having to miss a day of instruction. You resent the fact that teachers sometimes get the day off. Do you have any idea just how many hours they spend at home doing school work? I spent several hours at night, and many hours of my weekends are devoted to school work. I am sure that many "working class adults" do not spend that much time doing work outside of their place of employment. Misty, thank you for mentioning that the testing mandates do come from the "higher ups". Teachers do not like them anymore than the parents. We do NOT like having to follow such a strict list of students objectives, but it has to be done.
this is a problem that can be fixed and I agree with citizen
Yes, there is more to learning in the classroom than "test scores". But that is all that the teachers and adminstrators are worried about - TEST SCORES and school ratings. Teachers are made to teach to these tests, they are no longer teaching a well rounded curriculum. It is not the teachers or administrators fault, it come from higher up and it is hurting our students.
