UPDATE 2/18/10 @ 10:30PM
APPLE GROVE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- What started out as a hostage situation ended with one man dead and his estranged wife in the hospital.
It happened at about 9:00 Thursday evening on Jerry's Run Road right off of Route 2 in Apple Grove.
Corporal Chris Zerkle of the West Virginia State Police tells WSAZ.com the man, Troy McQueen, held his estranged wife, Rebecca McQueen, hostage in a home, then the two moved to a car -- where the hostage situation continued.
At 8:30 p.m. Mason County Dispatchers got a call about a domestic/hostage situation. State Police and Mason County Deputies arrived on scene, saw that it was a hostage situation and discussed a plan of action. Police had a staging area set up a short distance from the house.
By this time, Rebecca McQueen was driving the car, she drove it to the staging area -- that's when officers heard a gunshot from inside the vehicle.
"Mr. McQueen shot Rebecca McQueen in her lower abdomen, through the groin," Cpl. Zerkle said.
Officers told Troy McQueen to put his weapon down, but he refused.
"We felt immediate threat, gave several commands to put the weapon down and he did not do so," Cpl. Zerkle said.
That's when officers took action. State Police say a Trooper shot four times, one of those shots -- killing Troy McQueen.
State Police says there were no domestic violence petitions at this time between the two, but there had been in the past.
Rebecca McQueen was conscious and talking when she was pulled out of the vehicle. She was flown to a hospital in Huntington.
According to a spokesperson with the West State Police tells WSAZ.com the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. This is standard protocol for any officer involved in an active shooting.
No other details are being released at this time.
