Snow Days Mean Catch-Up for Teachers

The snow days were fun while they lasted, but now thousands of students are playing catch up after missing more than a week of classes and valuable teaching time.
Now, teachers are now trying to stop the slippery slide and get their classes back on track.
Mrs. Novotny's science class at St. Joseph Grade School is playing catch-up. After a string of un-scheduled days off, not everyone is as sharp as they were a week ago.
“I’m a little rusty. I had a hard time remembering where to go and what to do and where we were in our textbooks because we’ve been out for so long,” said Catherine Jenkins, a student at St. Joseph Grade School.
It was a problem Mrs. Novotny anticipated and tried to troubleshoot.
“I posted the outline for the assignment we are working on today hoping they would check on Edline and see it during their break, but no one checked! But, they will next time, I suspect,” said Mrs. Novotny, a teacher at St. Joseph Grade School.
“I did a little reading and studied science while I was off,” said Zachary Andrews, a student at St. Joseph Grade School.
“It’s been a real concern with our students being out so many days and challenging for teachers to help them catch up,” said Carol Templeton, principal at St. Joseph Grade School.
Templeton’s primary concern is academics and with their annual standardized testing right around the corner, it's crunch time at the worst time.
“We don’t take the WESTEST, which is scheduled for later in the year in May. Our standardized testing is right around the corner. We have only three weeks to prepare and we’re already behind a week and a half,” said Templeton.
Back to the science lab, the string of snow days now means the science fair scheduled for this week won't happen until next week.
Jenkins is perfectly okay with that.
“It gives me extra time to do more research on my project,” said Jenkins.
While students are getting a little extra time, teachers are working double time to catch up. Teachers say they may have to streamline some subjects in order to devote the needed time to others before testing time.

I'm sick of snow also. But instead of letting you children play video games and watch TV while it snows Why don't you be the TEACHER ??? Make sure that they DO NOT fall behind in their school work. So when they do get to go back to school that it will not be so hard on the students and teachers. And their grades will not suffer.
I get so tired of people slamming teachers - as if we control the weather and the calling off of school. I'm really sorry if having your kids at home is cramping your style. Most of us that teach want to be in the classroom with our kids, because we are committed to our kids . . .your kids. So, if you're not a teacher, don't know a teacher or aren't married to one . . . then you really don't have a a solid basis for your UNEDUCATED opinion.
I believe that in Pike County, KY that there were 21 days of school missed. That's over a month of school missed. I have no idea how this is going to be made up, but it needs to be made up some way. They might have to do some extra hours added onto their days or go on some Saturdays. They really do need to make up for the education that they missed.
