QUINCY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- An act of kindness at Riverside High continues to grow.

Staff has made room inside the eastern Kanawha County School for a food pantry.

When Morgan Bauer's community service class found out one of their classmates family needed food, some students and staff stepped up and bought groceries. The idea now, though, is to create a food pantry.

It's a confidential resource for students. Principal Paula Potter is making sure students are aware so they can get the help they might need or even donate.

For some students, the meals they eat at school are it for the day. Potter says if students basic needs aren't met, then education takes a back seat.

"My fear is that there might be someone who would not feel comfortable coming forward, so what we are trying to do is communicate enough that this is here, that it is confidential," Potter says. "We can take the food to their house. It's not something they have to be labeled."

Bauer says when she told her mom about the student in need, she shared in her sadness.

"It's heartbreaking, and I am very glad that someone stepped up and made the situation known so they could get help," Bauer said. "Hopefully now it will make other students who need help step up and say they need something so no one has to hungry."

Just last week, students from Riverside donated $500 dollars to the Red Cross to help with relief in Haiti.

I am so very proud of these children helping out their peers. So many times now you hear how there is so much hatred between teens but this is a step in the right direction. Way to go you guys and keep it up. An act of kindness will never go unnoticed and you will be blessed in ways you never thought possible. God Bless.

I think this is a great idea! I'm so glad it is working so well for them. I just wonder how this takes place without students' peers finding out what's going on. So many students just can't keep a secret. Students can be relentless and cruel in their teasing of one another. They aren't mature enough to realize the damage they do to one another.
