HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The United States got rid of slavery back in the 1800's, but the concept and the practice still exists around the world.
Saturday, the Salvation Army and World Hope International teamed up with the First Wesleyan Church in Huntington to host a community forum about human trafficking.
The goal was to raise awareness about the modern day form of slavery, and stress the importance of empowering the community against these practices.
Terry Roberts trains caregivers who take care of human trafficking survivors and says, "People can help in small ways and big ways, and we're hoping that by a presentation like this people will heed the call, you know. See what's going on out there and feel the need to be part of the solution."
The forum was also an opportunity to learn more about other world-wide civil rights issues like domestic violence.

I seriously doubt this is some huge ordeal in the Tri-State area. It seems that time would be more well spent by charity and awareness organizations here locally to focus on homeless and helping feed the elderly and such. Those problems do exist in the area.
Could you please give an online reference where a person could go to see these statistics? And exactly what forms of human trafficking are you speaking of? Specifically what you mentioned occurs right here in our region... I never dreamed this was happening in the U.S. to any significant degree, especially in the tri-state!
I was there at the forum and am a member of the First Wesleyan Church and the research and statistics that we were coming across when we were putting this forum together were astounding and just plain SCARY!!! Alot of people turn away, don't want to think about it or just plain "dont want to know" but this goes on here today and it goes on right here in our region so we all need to come together to put a stop to this once and for all. Let's get together and rescue our regions children and all the children around the world that suffer this horrible fate. Don't think that you are only one person and can't make a difference. We can all make a difference!!
