CROSS LANES, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A man in a motorized wheelchair is in the hospital after being hit by a vehicle.

It happened on Big Tyler Road in Cross Lanes. A portion of that road is now closed.

Police say the man was riding down the street when a vehicle hit him from behind. The driver fled the scene and police do not have a description.

Jaws of Life were used to cut the man out of his wheelchair. Police on scene say he did not suffer life threatening injuries, but was taken to Charleston General Hospital with back and leg pain.

To all of those who blames my son for being in the road, driving his wheelchair, My son did live in that neighborhood for a short time. His address as of now is CAMC because he now is having seizures, which he had not had since he was 6 years old, and they are unable to get them under control. He no longer has a wheelchair because of the accident and his insurance will not replace it because he had just received his new chair. The person who hit him must not have a caring bone in their body or they would have at least stopped and made sure he was alive. Instead they run and left him there maybe to die. The driver is no different then truck driver in Kenova or the woman in St Albans who both hit somebody and left the scene. I hope this driver can live with their actions and remember there is karma and what goes around comes around.

My husband Branden Stewart which has been seen on the news several times, suffers from cerebal palsy and is in a electric wheelchair and it scares me to death knowing he is out on the roads some days. which he's always got supervision! but this is horrible & his old chair has HAZARD lights and if they dont come on them Branden said thats theres kits to put some type of lighting on the chairs, he said its "50 watt housing bulbs" and wire them to the battery with a toggle switch to turn them on and off. i think it should be a law to have some type of light on all chairs or safety tape or some type of reflecters. So this type of accident doesnt happen again! we both pray for the man and hopes hes alright

I do hope the person in the wheelchair is okay, but if the wheelchair didn't have any headlights, he had no business in the middle of the road when it is dark outside.
