UPDATE: Tuesday 2/23
ATHENS, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A grand jury in Athens County, Ohio has indicted Matthew Culbertson on murder and other charges following a shooting on Saturday.
Investigators say Culbertson, 26, of Athens was drunk when he shot and killed 22-year old Jerri Vernon of Straitsville at a house in New Marshfield.
Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly says Culbertson and others had been drinking alcohol and practice-shooting on Saturday. “When they came back in to the residence the Culbertson boy pointed the weapon at the victim and she asked if that weapon was loaded and he remarked and he pulled the trigger,” said Kelly.
“If the firearm had gone off incidentally that would be a different story. The allegation here is that the firearm didn't go off accidentally,” said Kelly.
Culbertson is charged with murder, reckless homicide, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault and handling weapons while intoxicated.
He is expected to be arraigned later this week.
