CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WV MetroNews) -- The House of Delegates passed a resolution Monday naming the bridge over the Elk River at Big Chimney after slain Charleston police officer Jerry Jones.

"The Jerry Allen Jones Memorial Bridge" resolution was received during the floor session by Jones' widow Samantha, his mother and father and Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster.

Jones, 27, was shot and killed by friendly fire Sept. 13, 2009 following a police pursuit of Kanawha County resident Brian Good. Good was also killed.

Monday's resolution said Officer Jones hoped that by being a police officer he could "rid the Charleston area of crime and make it a better place for his fellow West Virginians to live."

Jones graduated from Elk Valley Christian School and joined the Marines. He served in Afghanistan.

The bridge being named is located on Route 114.
