NEW INFO: Small Leak Reported From Barge at Institute Plant, No Immediate Danger
Metro 911 dispatchers tell us that a Bayer employee reported that a small amount of acetic acid was released from a barge at their Institute plant.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Metro 911 dispatchers tell us that a Bayer employee reported that a small amount of acetic acid was released from a barge at their Institute plant.

It happened about 2 p.m. Monday, but we still don't know how much of the chemical was released.

Acetic acid is an organic acid that gives vinegar its sour taste and smell. It is also used as a solvent.

The worker who reported the leak told dispatchers there was no danger to the public.

INSTITUTE, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Dispatchers tell WSAZ.com several people have called 911 to report a sulfur smell being detected near Bayer Plant in Institute.

911 dispatchers say emergency crews responded to the Institute area around 1:00 p.m. Monday to investigate the smell.

According to a dispatcher, Barry Martin, who works at Bayer, called 911 to report a small amount of Acetic Acid was released from a barge while some lines were being cleared.

The exact amount of the chemical is unknown at this time. However, Martin told dispatchers there is no immediate danger to the public.
