HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ-TV) -- All those red lights could easily be the number one cause of road rage in Huntington. But now, Huntington officials hope a new traffic system will put more go into your stop-and-go commute.
City planners are hoping to get the state-of-the-art computerized traffic system at 57 intersections across Huntington. Charles Holley is the Director of Development and Planning for the City of Huntington. He says this new system will be paid for by an air quality grant.
"The way we tied this in so we could use the money for the traffic signals is if we get our signals synchronized so that you can drive through without having to stop at every light," Holley said. "You can reduce energy consumption, reduce gas consumption and thereby increase air quality."
Holley says the new system will not only ease traffic issues, but also save the city some green.
"Right now, we spend $200,000 to $250,000 a year just to keep the lights on at the intersections," Holley said. "This will save as much as 90%, is the claim."
Holley said the new system could also help ease traffic problems during a Marshall University football game or event downtown. He says the new system would change traffic lights to help push traffic out of Huntington.
The contract for the traffic system still has to be approved. That decision will be made at Monday Night's Huntington City Council Meeting. If approved, the city hopes to have the project underway by the end of this year.

I've been calling Huntington "Redlightington" for years. This joint is the worst place to get around in that I've ever seen. You could walk from Baskin Robbins to Marshall faster than you could drive it. Especially those asinine intersections at Charleston and Daulton Avenues. And speaking of asinine, what about the red light at Chandler's on Waverly Rd. that has to be the stupidest red light in the world. I think Chandler's must be paying them to put that light there so people will look at their cabinets while waiting all day for the light to change for a street that only has about three cars a day coming out of it.
Very good point ANONYMOUS. Sad to say but the article is about Huntington. Need I say more? Common sense isn't one of the requirements for being a city official.
Its about time they decide to do this, doesn't galapolis OH have something like that already. I think their traffic lights are synched and so are other towns in Ohio. but in WV its different. not only huntington, but charleston and other towns in WV should consider the same.
