CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- For 70 years, Washington Manor has been a fixture in Charleston's downtown landscape.
The public housing apartment complex has endured thousands of tenants and decades of wear.
The Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority has been moving forward with a plan to bring the complex into the future. Several new town house units have been built and 80 more are now under construction.
Nearly 180 units remain, but not for long. The Housing Authority plans to demolish them and build more townhouses and apartments.
"It's kind of redoing the face of public housing," said Michele Hatfield, who is with the Charleston-Kanawha Housing Authority. "We're updating and making these home that are desirable and people want to live in."
The goal is to give the complex a "neighborhood" feel.
Right now, residents have to go up a stairwell to get to the apartments. With the new town houses, each residence will have its own private front entrance.
The units under construction now are expected to be completed this summer. Demolition of the remaining units is planned for September.
Residents living at Washington Manor are getting assistance in finding a new place to live.
