CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's Legislature may not tackle the looming problem of public retiree costs this session.
Senators missed a Monday deadline to file what they hoped would be a wide-ranging response to the massive funding shortfall resulting from these costs.
Sen. Brooks McCabe cited objections from stakeholders. Key House members also disagree with some proposals.
McCabe said a Senate committee could still launch a limited bill by Friday.
Either way, the Kanawha County Democrat believes a special legislative session is needed. But Gov. Joe Manchin is not yet ready to convene one solely on that issue.
The state needs nearly $8 billion to cover the projected cost of health care and other non-pension retiree benefits promised to public employees.

I should hope not. The public employees of WV deserve every penny promised to them. We elected to take these jobs because of these promised benefits. It is not our fault the Federal Government let the private sector jobs in this country fail because of things like NAFTA and unregulated financial institutions. Why should we suffer? We did our jobs. If the state needs more money, why don't the place a higher tax on vacant land in this state? I have been trying to purchase some land to hunt on and people want 3 prices for it. The real estate sites show how much the annual taxes are and it is ridiculously low. Remember, most public employees have low pay and must sit back and watch the rest of the world spend money we don't have. It is a trade off....Pay me now or pay me later. I chose later and stuck to my end of the deal the state made with me by working my job. So give me my retirement check and benefits I was promised, keep your over priced land and start collecting more property taxes
Other than health care, what other "non-retirement" benefits are at stake?
