CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- West Virginia Republicans pushed hard to amend the Constitution to make marriage a legal union only between a man and a woman.

The GOP said they can't understand why 30 other states are able to get a Constitutional amendment on the ballot but West Virginia can't.

"That's what we should legally recognize, and I don't believe we should start going down the slippery slope of recognizing other relationships," House Minority Leader Tim Armstead said. "Whether you call it marriage or you give it the characteristics of marriage, you're going down a slippery slope there and you're eroding what I think the people of West Virginia want."

Some West Virginians think it is important to recognize other relationships.

"There is no boundaries to love, and I don't know that a lot of people know what marriage really does mean even in a man-woman relationship," Beth Kerns said. "Look at the divorce rate, so what defines a marriage?"

That was the question Tuesday on the House floor, but Democrats don't believe it's the right time to debate the issue.

"Certainly jobs are really at the forefront, and we need to be making sure that we're doing things that are jobs friendly," House Majority Leader Brent Boggs said. "We need to really work for our working families."

Committees will decide if the issue will be brought up in this legislative session.

Ok, now to all you "Christians", I hate to call myself a "Christian". Who are we to judge? It is not our place. We are supposed to love all men... “As much as it depends on you, live peacefully with all men." Peaceful is the key word there. It is you "Christians" that are ruining this word because we are free to love and live OUR LIFE. Not the life you choose for us. Welcome to America! What happend to all the love? There is to much hate. As a "Christian" we should love. I love. You love. They love. Let God choose if they are sinners. This world would be a better place if everyone would stop HATING!!! I am straight and it would destroy me if someone told me I couldnt be in love. I would do anything to live in a world where everyone just loved.

Marriage is recognized by the state because for 200 years the state has seen the value of the family in society. This is not about whether people value marriage any longer, this about fighting an agenda that seeks to impose its values or absence of, on society. Homosexuals will be involved with one another even if this passes, but they want you to accept their behvior. I for one am in favor of this bill.

I do not see why the people of WV object to gay people marrying when the people of WV are ruining marriage themselves by marrying their brother, father or sister!
