Charter Schools Legislation Clears W.Va. House Committee
Legislation that would allow teachers and parents to create independent charter schools has cleared the Senate Education Committee despite opposition from the state's two teacher unions.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Legislation that would allow teachers and parents to create independent charter schools has cleared the Senate Education Committee despite opposition from the state's two teacher unions.
Charters are innovative public schools that give teachers and parents more control over the education process.
Supporters say charters are a way to improve education, but opponents say the results are mixed.
The teacher unions argue charter schools are not needed because last year lawmakers set up school "innovation zones" that do the same thing as charter schools, but still protect employee work rules.

"Why not put some real effort into bringing our current system up to standards?" What part of that do you not understand J? To be honest, I don't care if they do go with a Charter school system. I'm sure with the mentality of many of the parents and teachers in this state it will generate some great news stories.

I think a Charter school would be great! We have some good Teachers and we have some that need to leave. I would put my kids in a Charter school.
