TEAYS VALLEY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Mary Lou Retton and Randy Barnes are two famous gold medal Olympians from West Virginia, but down the road there might be another super athlete.

Eleven-year-old Trevor Barnes is putting shot put at the top of his game and hopes to follow in the footsteps of his unbeatable cousin.

"I like throwing it as far as I can," he says.

The fifth-grader loves sports, but at the top of his list is shot put. Trevor practices once a week with trainer Robbie Gordon.

"He works hard and does what he can with baseball and other sports, but when he practices shot-put he turns into an animal," Gordon says.

Just a couple weeks ago Trevor placed first, capturing a gold medal at the A.A.U. Track and Field National Championship in Cleveland, Ohio.

"It was amazing winning it all and very exciting,” he says.

While some say Trevor's success in shot put comes from practicing weekly, others say it could be in his genes.

In 1996, Trevor’s cousin Randy Barnes of St. Albans, W.Va., won the gold medal at the Olympics in Atlanta.

"You look at Trevor, and he’s a good-size kid for his age and strong," Gordon says. "But then you hear of Randy Barnes being his relative and the kid has got to have some kind of gene in him, and I think he definitely does."

Trevor’s big cousin does help him hone his skills.

"He’s been telling me how to throw it out like this and keep my arm in,” Trevor said, demonstrating his technique.

Trevor is shooting for the 2020 Olympics. While there is no word where that will be yet, Trevor says he’ll keep practicing and competing until that summer Olympics debut.

Ex-putter is exactly right...I know he is young, but he REALLY needs to keep that elbow in and not "throw" the put so much, or he will have major shoulder as well as elbow issues. At 11 years old, the basics is what he needs right now. Foot work and form will be next as they are two of the main issues that make even the average shot putter much better. Take your time young man, learn the basics as I am sure coach is telling you, and your throws will continue to improve. Good luck and overall, have fun with it. One hting, the discus will help you with foot work if you decide to go that route as well.

great story. i applaud this boy. he does needs some better coaching though. i wathed the film on tv and he is throwing the shot more than eh is putting it. trevor even said randy b. told him to push straighter, and not throw like baseball. help him out coach or this kid will be replacing rotator cuffs every year for the rest of his life.
