A man from Ohio has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a relative.

SCIOTO COUNTY, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man from Ohio has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of sexually assaulting a family member.

Robert W. Byrd, 46, of Wheelersburg, was found guilty on two counts of sexual battery, three counts of gross imposition and two counts of rape.

He was sentenced Tuesday, August 24.

According to a news release from the Scioto County Prosecuting Attorney, "Byrd was arrested on February 23, 2010, after out of state relatives reported to the Scioto County Sheriff's Office that Byrd had molested the teenage family member in August 2009, and again during Christmas break when the teen visited the family in Wheelersburg."

During the case, a recorded telephone conversation between Byrd and the teen was played for the jury. In that conversation, "Byrd admitted to the sexual offenses, apologized to the teen, and insinuated that he was going to commit suicide," according to the news release.

According to testimony in the trial, Byrd was arrested after he fled to Kentucky and attempted suicide.

Byrd had previously been convicted of felony child abuse in North Carolina.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- A man from Wheelersburg is under arrest, after he was accused of sexually assaulting a family member.

Deputies arrested 45-year-old Robert Byrd following an investigation. Byrd is charged with 3rd degree gross sexual imposition.

Byrd is expected in court on Wednesday. His bond is set at $50,000.
