CINCINNATI (AP) - Ohio schools hard hit by this year's snows still have five calamity days for canceling classes without having to make up the lost time. That changes next year.

Districts will have only three calamity days beginning in the 2010-2011 school year.

Educators, state officials and others say making up lost days can complicate school planning and even add costs, at times. But many support reducing calamity days in favor of providing as much class time as possible for students.

They say instructional time is necessary as schools in Ohio and around the country look to improve student achievement.

The cutback was a compromise after legislators decided against Governor Ted Strickland's more extensive proposal to add 20 more school days over the next 10 years.

I think Mr. Strickland needs to wake up and remember where he came from. When kids make up days at the end of the year or get a holiday taken from them because of snow days, they resent it. They do not learn during these days. To think that a number of 180 days versus a number of 170 days in session makes such a big difference is crazy. As for longer school days or school year round. Maybe if it takes that, then they should not have gym, or art, or music, No assemblies or field trips. Waiver days for teacher meetings can be moved to Saturday instead of school being missed on a Friday or Monday. By the time my child rides the bus to school and back home she is in school for 8 hours. That should be more than enough time for her to learn what she needs to know. I am generally in favor of her going to school and making friends. Why is it that a non trained parent can home school for an avg of 4 hrs a day, and manage to meet state qualifications, but the state thinks we need longer days?

We live in a state where snow is obvious to happen. My kid's school uses saturdays and holidays for makeup calamity days. so now with even less calamity days, the saturdays and missed holidays will be even more. Its silly, and they should pre-plan for the fact that we DONT live in California, and make some better decisions. They will also try harder to get kids into school on days that may not be safe enough to. Our kids have great education compared to where I am from (Colombia)- Dont overdue it. a couple days keeping kids in during a snow storm, wont break your countries educational future.

Ridiculous law. Our law makers are all so big and bad anymore. they do this just for control....not for the good of the children. Those days they will ahve to make up will be a waste of taxpayers money because the kids will be 'done' anyway. Just putting in their time like prisioners. That is just stupid.. Especially in se Ohio.. get a grip lawmakers and quit being all big and bad.........
