HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Big changes could be on the way for students and teachers in Cabell County. A special committee with the Cabell County Board of Education has been receiving input from teachers, staff and faculty about making changes to the school calendar.
The committee is exploring three options. The first would be to keep the traditional calendar. The second option is to start the school year a few weeks earlier and finish the first semester before Christmas break. The final option is for a year-round schedule.
"I would say you could very well see some slight changes this year, and some more changes the following year," Cabell County Schools Official Dr. Jeff Smith said.
But even Dr. Smith knows that keeping everyone in the county isn't easy.
"One teacher wrote 'you're not going to be able to please everyone,'" Smith said. "We know that. We're all giving our ideas. What we have to do is weigh the pros and cons."
Teachers we spoke with say anything different can take a little while to get comfortable with.
"I think change is always scary for people," Southside Elementary teacher Holly Hickman said. "I think its going to be huge. Especially if it's year-round school. That one concerns me the most. I know a lot of people who find care for the summer would have trouble finding care three weeks at a time for their children."
Parents say it all comes down to whatever is the best option for their children to receive the best education.
"Once again, it's the consistency," Joni Pappas said. "We all need breaks, but there's been a lot of research to show that shorter breaks throughout the year have served a better educational purpose."

I fully agree with Taylor's input, having (we the students) taking in part of such a decision, considering this change could be for our benefit or not!
Thank you Randall!!! Heather and Ahem have no idea about what is required by the state and the number of days that teachers work. The state requires the OSE and ISE days. We are under contract for 200 days. I have looked at all three of the calendars. The year-round one could be "tweaked" so that school would start later and end earlier. Instead of having three weeks in between each nine weeks, they should have two weeks. That would make for more acceptable starting and ending dates. I am concerned about teachers who take classes in the summer. It would definitely impact them if they had to start school in July. Teachers do have to take classes to continue their certification, and there are those who are working toward their Master's. Also, the summer months provide teachers with the opportunity obtain professional development. As for teachers having an input on the calenday, we don't carry that much clout when the "powers that be" set the new calendars.
I fully agree with Taylor. I enjoy my summer and the longer break it brings. I just do not believe that year-round school is for the best. I also participate in sports and hobbies that I do in the summer.
