MU Faculty Push for Independent Review of Grade Change Issues
Marshall University faculty members say they want a third party to review the policies and procedures they believe were broken during the grade change issue.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va (WSAZ) -- Marshall University faculty members say policies and procedures may have been violated when a dean of a college took over supervision of a student's coursework.
Dr. Dallas Brozik has taught at Marshall University for nearly 25 years. He says he's always taken his role as a faculty member very seriously, that's why he continues to press for action on the University grade change issue.
“The faculty told the Executive Committee we don’t trust you," Dr. Brozik said. "They should give the investigation to a third party, but instead they kept it for themselves. A number of us feel there’s a need for an independent review of the issue."
The issue started back in the spring of 2009 when Emily Perdue, daughter of state treasurer John Perdue, received incompletes for two independent studies courses taught by Dr. Laura Wyant. According to Dr. Wyant, Emily missed most of the class meetings and never turned in any work during the semester.
After meeting with Emily and Mr. Perdue, Dean Rosalyn Templeton took over supervision of Emily for the course. Emily later turned that work in at the end of the summer and Dean Templeton changed the incompletes to A's. But, it's the issue of a dean overriding a professor in this manner that concerns some faculty.
“You grade the students you teach. If you didn’t teach them, you don’t grade them," Dr. Brozik said. "The only case where you take over a course for a professor is if that professor dies. Otherwise, you don’t do it, in my professional opinion and I can’t recall a time that I’ve ever seen it happen any other way. It’s a policy and procedure that’s been tested for thousands of years in universities around the world and it works.”
Dr. Brozik and more than a dozen other faculty members asked the faculty senate to investigate the issues and they did. Dr. Brozik says even that report shows fault.
“I was surprised," Dr. Brozik said. "Aside from the basic exchange of papers, the Faculty Senate or Executive Committee never called Dr. Wyant and talked to her or gave her the courtesy of asking her any questions. In my mind, that’s no kind of an investigation at all."
Now, faculty are requesting and independent investigation and a statement from the top administrator -- President of the University, Dr. Stephen Kopp.
WSAZ.com contacted Marshall University and was told Dr. Kopp has no comment. The University maintains they've investigated this matter thoroughly and found no wrongdoing. They say they consider the case closed.
At Thursday's Faculty Senate meeting, members went into executive session and voted to pass the case along to Academic Affairs. They also say they consider their work on the case complete.

I too am a MU grad, but I don't believe the Feds are omniscient. And it doesn't appear that all the faculty agrees with the findings; at least, Dr. Brozik doesn't think so. I think I agree with him. The investigation should include the teacher's side. Why not let the faculty and administration find an agency of their choosing to investigate? When I heard the findings of the Feds I wasn't really convinced. Maybe I just don't have much faith in the system.
So they want an investigation of the investigation of the review that the FBI also investigated? Can they find out who killed JFK too?!
This seems to be a situation where a dean (Templeton) wanted to gain political favor from John Perdue so she changed two grades posted by a professor. It seems a lot of faculty are upset about this scandal. I applaud the efforts of the faculty to ask for a true investigation.
