HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Closeness is what makes cross-town rivalries so intense. For cross-state rivals, however, the competition itself is usually the key.

One long-running rivalry at the West Virginia State High School Wrestling Tournament in Huntington has a "coming and going" sort of connection this year.

After 31 years of working in the Golden Bears corner and 13 consecutive state championships, Oak Glen High wrestling Coach Larry Shaw is retiring.

"It's just time," he says. "They say you know when to move on."

Joey Paolo, one of his wrestlers, says, "We've won 13 in a row -- why not make it 14 and go out with a bang, right?

On the other hand, Point Pleasant High's rookie head Coach John Bonecutter wants to turn around what the results board showed again Friday morning -- the Knights have finished second to Oak Glen the last three years straight.

"Coach Shaw has taken Oak Glen to where every other team wants to be," Bonecutter says.

Oak Glen is located in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle, and Point Pleasant a couple of hundred miles southwest down the Ohio River. Over time, though, the two distant wrestling school programs have developed a next door type rivalry.

Both coaches agree high school wrestling is about families and generations. Shaw is now coaching the sons of three of his former Oak Glen wrestlers.

Bonecutter says at least a dozen other Point Pleasant Bonecutters, both past and present, have wrestled.

Wrestling is one of the hardest physical sports out there. Have you ever considered checking out what wrestling is all about? You will find it is about a group of individuals who must rely on themsleves to get the job done with some help from their coach. The coach teaches them many moves and the best way to get out of those moves if needed. Wrestlers must think quick, pay attention, try to multi-task several different things at one time, not to mention they only have about 5 minutes to accomplish all of this. Have you ever seen a deaf, blind, Autistic wrestler, or a wrestler with physical limitations on the mat? They are awesome to watch, because they already have obstacles to overcome from the beginning. Contact a local youth wrestling league, visit them, watch, talk to the wrestlers, parents, and coaches. I am sure they will let your son try it then see what you think. By the way, there are girls who wrestle and I doubt that they get up every morming and put on their "killer" face.
