The Curse of the Lottery?

By: Randy Yohe Email

Working in Westwood, childhood friend Steve Dinguss saw the national story a few years back touring David Edwards lavish Miami mansion.

“If I had that kind of money, I don't know what kind of temptations I might see, but I'd like to find out,” Steve Dinguss of Westwood said.

That mansion foreclosed and sold at auction. Edwards had his furnishings stored at a warehouse until last Saturday, when creditors held another auction selling off a set of sphinx statues, an eight foot medieval lance, some marble pink elephant side tables, two giant brass urns and more for tens of thousands of dollars.

This is where the rags to riches to rags story began. The gas station where David Edwards bought a PowerBall ticket hit for 41 million dollars and after taxes, took home $27 million.

But family friend Pat Caniff is among many homeowners who wondered about Edwards spending habits.

“I said you have seven cars but you can only drive one at a time. He said I always wanted them,” Pat Caniff said.

“He's had a tough time but he's given back to the community-- the fire dept, the playgrounds,” Brian Barber of Westwood said.

Florida newspapers report David Edwards was living with his possessions in the warehouse for a time, where owners found hypodermic needles scattered about, and they report the ex convict still faces a Florida hearing on a heroin charge.

“It's the curse of the lottery,” Barber said.

Many of his hometown friends said they think David Edwards is seriously ill, but the mysteries of his whereabouts, his activities, how much money he has left after six years, if any, has become the stuff of urban myth and legend.

From rags to riches and now, back to rags again. The troubled tale of local PowerBall winner David Edwards saw another sad chapter unfold this past weekend.
