CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Hitting the roads in a snow covered car could cost you in more ways than one.
Under West Virginia law, windshields along with side and rear windows must be clear of obstructions. The law applies to snow.
Drivers can face a fine of $100 for having snow covered windows. Repeat offenders can face fines up to $500.
Having snow on the top of your vehicle is not illegal. However, you can be cited if something were to come off of your vehicle and cause an accident.
Virginia Thomasson, Assistant Manager of Advanced Auto Parts, says she's among the many drivers who have headed out without clearing away the snow.
"I've seen what it does. It goes to more than just your wiper or your windshield. It can cost you upwards of $1,000 if you need the mechanisms or wiper arms."
Thomasson says the biggest mistake drivers make is assuming that the powdery snow will wipe right off. She says often times, the wiper is actually frozen to the windshield and can rip off.

I do work for a living, pay my taxes, and take care of my responsibilities...JUST FYI...I am sick to death of people complaining about laws...Please note that if someone you loved were injured or killed due to someone driving an unsafe vehicle you would be yelling. Tell you the same thing I told MEL>....get over it.
Me again..... If you carry liability insirance, it does not cover road hazard damage. It only carries damage to others property, not yours. I can understand where Mel is comming from, to a point. The potholes are so bad, a person could be a DUI suspect, trying to avoid the monsters. There are a lot more road harzards out there, that can cause an accident, then snow on a vehicle. If snow does fly off a vehicle, dont get so close to them. WV drivers has a bad habit of tailgating. People always in a hurry. Mountain side slippage is another problem. Trees, rocks, debris, its bad too. There are tons of other things that can cause accidents on the roadways, they need to focus on all of it, instead of just snow. Not everybody can cover full coverage on their vehicles if they are 6 plus years old, whats the point? If we turn in road damage, our premiums goes up, if we do cover full coverage. WE all know how to clean snow off our vehicles, we are not stupid, sorry to bust your bubble pal.
MeAGain dont think anyone wants your opinion. do you work for the city?
