CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- It's going to be stick-your-nose-to-the-grindstone from now until summer for students across West Virginia.

A series of storms that dumped more than 100 inches of snow across the mountains this winter has some school districts struggling to make up near-record numbers of snow days.

Many schools are canceling field trips, eliminating theater productions and other in-school activities, turning professional development days into instructional days and delaying the last day of school.

Eight school districts have missed 20 days or more of school, 40 have missed between 10 and 19 while eight have missed fewer than 10.

The West Virginia Department of Education says there's only been two days since Jan. 1 when all schools in all 55 counties opened without delays.

The United States as a whole lacks behind the educational system of other countries for mainly two reasons: (1) teachers in the U.S. do not have the same level of autonomy as other countries (i.e. the TEACHERS are the school board) (2) students in the U.S. don't go to school for as long during the day or year as other countries. Until these things change, we will continue to outsource for doctors, engineers, and architects. The rich can afford their tuition; the middle class is screwed, and statistically, the lower class will acceept a substantial education, if any, when they're given free funds. Thanks government for screwing the middle class!

They close public schools at the drop of a hat. Either stop closing for 2 inches of snow or go year 'round. It's not like West Virginian students are getting an on-par education anyways... What's the big deal? I have went to high school in both West Virginia and Ohio and it was like going from 6th grade (this was West Virginia's 10th grade) to 12th grade (this was in Ohio and I took AP classes in 10th grade). Not even the school I went to in Ohio cancelled as much as WV; and where I lived in Ohio was more "hilly" than the local regions of WV.

Here's an idea. If the kids absolutely must have three months off, make them December, January, and February and forget about the snow days.
