MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) -- An initiative to educate young Iraqis in America has already produced 13 applications and two engineering school acceptances at West Virginia University.
WVU is one of 20 U.S. universities in the American Universities Iraq Consortium and recently had a meet-and-greet event in Baghdad.
The promise of a free education, funded by the Iraqi government, lured nearly 1,500 students.
The Iraq Education Initiative has set aside nearly $5 billion to help 10,000 students attend school in the U.S.
Dean of students David Stewart says Iraqis are already one of WVU's largest international groups, with more than 200 students now enrolled.
WVU's programs in petroleum and natural gas are popular with many students.
