POINT PLEASANT, W.Va. (AP) -- The Defense National Stockpile Center has reached an agreement with the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection to clean up a building on its former location in Point Pleasant.
The now-vacant 27,560-square-foot building was originally used to store approximately 1,681 metric tons of liquid mercury in more than 40,000 flasks. It was part of the federal center's role as a storage place for materials used to manufacture defense materials.
The state agency's Office of Environmental Remediation has negotiated a voluntary agreement with the center. It includes provisions for identifying human health and ecological risks associated with current and potential future uses of the site in order to establish appropriate cleanup standards.
