CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- As fear and concern grow for loved ones in the country of Chile, Verizon is making it easier for loved ones to keep in touch.
According to a news release from Verizon, "Verizon will waive all long-distance usage charges for calls from its residential land line and Verizon Wireless phones to Chile, from February 26th through March 6th. The company will also waive all Verizon Prepaid Phone Card charges for all long-distance calls placed from the U.S. to Chile."
The president of Chile says the number of those killed in Saturdays' massive earthquake has passed 700, and the number listed as missing is also climbing.
In an effort to combat looting, a spokesperson says essential items in major supermarkets will be given away for free, under the supervision of authorities.
Verizon also waived fees to call Haiti after an earthquake hit the region six weeks ago.

I don't know anyone in Chile personally, but I'm sure there are many relatives across Verizon's area. I mean they only provide service in 27 states. So I'm sure that there are enough there to merit this kindness. They also waived fees to Hati. Why must people be so cynical in a time of tragedy when companies are trying to help out. Just appreciate that people no matter how far away are doing what they can to help. You may not have relatives in Hati, but someone has a mother, daughter, sister, father son or brother there they are worried about. Try not to be so insanely ignorant and insensitive to things like this. All it does is display a gross example of ignorance.
Do you know anyone that lives in Chile? I don't. I wonder how many area residents have a friend or family in Chile. Not very many. Why don't they give free phone service to all Spanish-American War Veterans.
Why would you start talking about their phone service and prices? I am with you Krause... Thank you Verizon for your efforts in helping people get in contact with those they love who are affected by this tragic event. Not too many companies are willing to make that money sacrafice to help in the efforts. That says a lot for your compassion for this time of need.
