FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky House Speaker Greg Stumbo says there's a "growing chance" that higher education will be spared from the full extent of suggested budget cuts.
Stumbo spoke to reporters Sunday during a break in budget talks among top House Democrats. They are trying to put the finishing touches on a state spending proposal for the next two years.
House budget writers recently suggested a 2 percent cut for public universities and colleges in the first year of the next budget and flat funding in the second year.
Stumbo says House leaders now are hoping to restore money for higher education in both years.
He said the group is also looking at more suggestions to suspend some tax exemptions to help generate enough revenue to balance the next two-year budget.

I THINK ITS SO FUNNY EVERYONE WANTS MONEY FOR HIGHER EDUCATION I WAS IN SCHOOL 30 YRS AGO AND DIDN'T LEARN ANYTHING I'M SURE THAT SCHOOLS ARE NOT TEACHING LIKE THEY USED TO NOW! HIGHER EDUCATION, WHAT EVER WE ALL KNOW THE REAL TRUTH OF WHERE THAT MONEY IS GOING ESPECIALLY WHEN PRINCIPALS DON'T WANT TO HANDLE PARENTS CONCERNS AS YOU GET PAID TO, STOP FIGHTING AND BULLYING AS YOU GET PAID TOO! ONLY WHEN THE PARENTS STEP IN YOU CALL IT FAILURE TO TEACH OR SOME BOGUS CRAP I HAVE FOUGHT FOR STUDENTS IN RALIEGH COUNTY I KNOW THE TRUTH BEHIND YOUR GAMES! YOU CANNOT PLAY THEM WITH ME, HIGHER EDUCATION WHATEVER, THATS LIKE OBAMA SAYING WE HAVE CHANGE! YEAH WHEN WE BREAK DOLLARS WE DO! THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS A JOKE THE PARENT WOULD BE BETTER OFF TEACHING AND GETTING PAID BETTER OFF THAN YOUR SO CALLED SCHOOL SYSTEM!
There is one university employee for every 3 students at UK. That is ridiculous. Government is the only segment of the economy which does not have cutbacks in KY.
Bet they won't cut any budget for the sports section.
