CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A break in the snow is giving state and city road crews a chance to patch-up potholes.

The City of Charleston had their workers out to fill in the biggest holes in the road throughout the city.

"This has been one of the most harsh winters we've had probably since the mid 90's," said crew foreman, Ronnie Ramsey. "Because of the winter, we've been on snow duty so much whenever we do get a break then why try to take care of the holes."

The freezing and re-freezing of the asphalt is what causes potholes. A lot of damage is also done when snow scrapers hit the road, tearing up the road and curbs.

Crews can't permanently fix potholes right now because asphalt plants don't operate in the winter months. They use the cold patch method to temporarily fix the holes. Workers quickly fill them in with black-top then run over it to pack it down.

The Department of Highways has allocated $12 Million for a "Winter Damage Repair Program" to repair the damage caused by winter storms.

Wasn't the gas tax increase supposed to go towards taking care of and paving roads in WV Gov Joe? Why are they no longer paving roads in WV...does anyone know where are tax dollars are going?

potholes are a pain yes. but they are a result of the DOT cleaning the road so you can get out on the road. If you dont have to go out in it, then dont. Otherwise deal with it.

I hope Manchin hit every one of them on his trip through Huntington today.
