CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The rails to trails plan in Charleston is picking up steam. The project has been in the works for more than eight years but organizers say their hard work will soon pay off.
"The trestle across the Kanawha River is phase one," Dennis Strawn, president of the Kanawha Trestle Trail said. "It will connect with South Charleston and MacCorkle Avenue and will go back through South Charleston and the mound and other areas in South Charleston."
The trail will provide a safe place for walkers and bikers.
The trail will eventually connect all the hot spots in Charleston and South Charleston. It will wind past Appalachian Power Park, the State Capitol, Capitol Market, the West Side and other areas using old train tracks, rights of way and roads. The first phase will deal with the old train trestle on Charleston's West Side.
Friends of the Kanawha Trestle Trail met with community members Thursday night to discuss the project -- phase one will soon get underway now that $1.7 million secured by Senator Robert Byrd is now available. Three engineering studies are also underway.
"The trail is only literally about four miles long but it connects everything in Charleston," Strawn said.
The project will cost about $3.2 million dollars. Strawn says the federal government sets aside money specifically for walking and biking trails.
The project will be completed in three phases. Phase one is set to be completed by 2011.

This thing will continue to be a money pit. When are people going to wake up and realize that we cannot sustain the money outflow for all these pet projects? What is it going to take for the taxpayers to unite and stop such a waste of our tax dollars?
The entire structure needs to be removed. The structure has not been used since the mid 80's. The foundations are very weak. Money should have been spent on worthwhile projects such as a jobs program or feeding the hungry.
Projects like this will break this country. What a waste of money. But maybe Byrd will get his name on the bridge.
