CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The city of Charleston is tightening the purse straps on this year's budget.
Thursday night, city leaders crunched the numbers and say they expect to bring in a little more money this year than last year -- but they're still trying to tackle the growing unfunded liability for pensions and health care.
City leaders say there will be no pay increases for city employees this year. As another way to save money, if a firefighter or police officer leave or retires, that position will not be filled.
The city is also slashing the amount of money it gives to the Charleston Area Alliance. Members of the Alliance and the city leaders haven't seen eye to eye on issues like the Dow Tech Park. The city will be giving the Alliance $100,000 instead of $175,000.

TRIMMING THE BUDGET, WHY WERE THERE CITY CARS SITTING IN THE LONG LINE AT THE CARWASH ON VIRGINIA ST. TODAY AT ABOUT 2:OO. HOW LONG WERE THEY IN LINE? HOW MUCH DID WE PAY THAT CITY OFFICIAL FOR SITTING IN LINE? HOW MUCH DID WE PAY FOR THE CAR WASH? THIS WAS A LONG LINE AS WE ALL KNOW, SO WHAT WAS THE TOTAL OF THIS WASH JOB? NO DOUBT THERE WILL BE A BUNCH OF CITY CARS THERE MONDAY. THANKS FOR TAKING CARE OF US DANNY BOY.
the only raise this year is for mayor jones.nothing for any one else.
Funny and SAD thing about this story... both the fire and police dept. pay their $2 fee for the "right" to work for mayor jones and pay for his raises.... Lord willing not a one of this men will be injured due lack of manpower. What a shame that the men who protect this city have received no respect in return. Shame on you mayor Jones. I for one will remember this on election day.
