CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- Massey CEO Don Blankenship is gearing up for his company's annual event to honor mines who leaders have taken safety and environmental standards to the next level.
Massey Energy will also host a coal expo to display some initiatives the company has implemented as a whole. They are things Don Blankenship says helps Massey thrive, even when the coal industry is facing uncertain times.
"I am always the unusual one, I think that you have the ups and downs," Blankenship said. "So you have to be careful as an industry about celebrating fewer accidents in one year versus another, but I think the overall trend, and it will continue over the years is attributable to good engineering, more training, more consciousness on peoples part about the dangers and how to deal with them."
Blankenship says a new task force by the Federal Government to cut down on mine fatalities is more about political safety than coal miner safety.

Everyone always wants to see the "so called" bad that MASSEY does. BUT wait does anyone EVER mention the good????? NO and when they do "You guys"(tree hugging hipocrits) run your mouth. Do u honestly think MASSEY is the only company out here making mistakes the answer is NO!!!! but MASSEY is the only one you hear about and the difference is MASSEY takes everything it has to try to improve its companies. Everyone says MASSEY is polluting and killing WV..... lets sit back and think why r u guys not saying anything about the chemical plants, you know the ones you probably work for. OH THATS WHY because thats your job so better leave it be!!! WHATEVER!!! SUCH HIPOCRITS in this state. If it wasnt for MASSEY & DON BLANKLENSHIP you would have no WV to be talking about because (WV IS COAL!!!!!) so to all the hipocrits out there just trying to make a name for yourself why DONT YOU GET OUT OF WV!!!! WE DO NOT WANT YOU HERE!!!! I LOVE MASSEY ENERGY!!!!!!
Don Blankenship... American hero and leader of men.
Massey should invest their money in something that can provide energy and doesn't kill with pollution. Our lives aren't worth the people that make money off of it, and that includes the miners.
