More Lights may be the Future for Portsmouth
Last spring, several lights were removed from Route 52 and Route 23, now officials are looking back to see if the move had traveler's safety in mind.

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (WSAZ) -- Traffic lights were the topic of discussion at a public forum in Portsmouth Thursday night.
Mayor Jane Murray invited residents to hear a presentation on the city's work with the State Department of Transportation about the lights.
Last spring, several lights were removed from Route 52 and Route 23, now officials are looking back to see if the move had traveler's safety in mind.
One resident, Jacqueline Barker, said she thinks the city should replace the lights. "I came within inches of being hit from both sides," she said. "I changed my route downtown and have not used that since."
Folks at the meeting said they were pleased with the changes the city plans to make.

First a rock, and now traffic lights. What's next? For those whining about not being able to get into traffic. If you dont know how to take an allow or a few other rodes to get to an intersection with a light, then you really don't need to be driving anyway. Most people drive slower through their now than they did when the lights were up. Simply because they don't have to race the lights. Portsmouth is broke. Businesses in the area don't see the business they could, and it can get worse. When people have to stop at every intersection for a light. They find other ways to go, even if it is farther. Put em back up Mayor. Go ahead. But you can kiss the money I spend in your town goodbye. I will just forget about Portsmouth business and go spend my money where i don't have to dodge potholes every 10 feet and stop at every corner to see the prostitutes or drug dealers. Keep up the good work Jane. You will see just what an idiot you are.
Ok how many people complaining about the traffic light issue actually live in Portsmouth. Yes it is nice to drive 52 without having to stop so often. But when you live in town and try to cross 25 where there are no lights is an experiance it's self. During the the day on weekdays it's sit there until there is a break in traffic and hit the gas and go to get across 52. If you happen to want to turn and there is someone else waiting to turn or go straght the it's a challange at times. They could be set to work during peak hours and blink during non peak hours. Best of both worlds.
To echo Frank, it is very sad and depressing to return to the area after leaving. Portsmouth is so run down to the point that it looks tortured by the elements of the economy, poverty, drugs, and pollution (yes, I say pollution, because every time I return to the area, I go home with a horrible sinus headache)...I would also like to say that the local police force isn't as heavily staffed as they need to be and that is due in part to tax funding...which is directly correlated with the unemployment rate and low paying jobs in the area. It's not the mayor's fault that the police department can't respond to every single call. If more jobs were available in the area, more tax money could be funneled in to the city, thus more police officers could be hired. People in Portsmouth need to stand up and say to one another that it's NOT OKAY to not have a job and live off of the government...then you will begin to see some improvements and maybe feel a little safer sleeping at night.
