CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- The Kanawha County Animal Shelter is at its maximum capacity and needs your help.
With their precious faces, it's hard to believe many puppies and kittens call the animal shelter home.
As many as 30 puppies came into the animal shelter in just one day this week. It's an unexpected influx that's put a strain on the shelter which, as of Friday, had more than 200 animals and was at maximum capacity. Still, they try not to turn any animal away.
But with each new cat and dog, it's another mouth to feed. All told, it takes about 300 pounds of food daily to feed the shelter's animals, shelter director Carla Ford says.
She says last year, the shelter took in nearly 10,000 animals. The main reason is people don't spay and neuter their pets, which leaves so many animals without homes.
"It's more important to get it from here," Rosa Laughlin of Chesapeake, W.Va., says of adopting a pet. "I would encourage someone else to come here."
She says it's well worth what you get in return.
"I've gotten two animals here myself," Laughlin says. "I've gotten two cats; I love my cats."
If you would like to adopt an animal from the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association, you can call 304-342-1576.

Why are these animals in shelters to start with? MOST of them belonged to some one out there who became an ANIMAL OWNER which then makes them responsiable for the animal by LAW once they choose to feed or take a stray animal in, buy one or given a free animal from news adds etc. or adopt one. Most animals are in shelters because Animal Owners didn't take care of the animals or obey the laws on animals, took or put the animal out in areas to become strays or strays again, or just put them out the door and claim they don't know who the animal belongs to! Stop bashing non-animal owners we are not the ones who do this. It is your place to take care of your animals, get their shots etc., pay taxes on them and keep them in your homes and let them mess on your own property not the neighbors property. Don't comlain when people calls to have animals picked up because you don't obey the animal laws or take care of your animals, or you choose to abandon them, which causes more, & more strays.
If I had a child that was allergic to any animal,I would not bring it home just to put outside on a leash and leave it.The animal would have no bonding because it is common sense to know that no one is going to be outside all the time,or for many hours a day.Second if I had an animal previous and wanted to rent I would first ask the landlord if the animal was welcome and if I could not own my pets I would not rent there. If I was stuck in a contract that had a no pet policy then more than likely I would not have owned any upon signing the contract and I would know better than bring one home.If you are renting and the landlord dissaproves of pets than chances are he/she would not appreicate if you brought a pet on their property and chained it to a dog house, because as some of may be aware it can cause damage to a lawn not to mention the"forgotten dog" will get bored and begin digging holes.SL You need to read the comments completley because I'm not complaining,my town has no such law.
Perhaps the Kanawha Valley Animal Shelter can get the volunteers from the Putnam County Shelter who put that fellow's cat in the wrong bunch where it was put down. These volunteers would soon take care of the overcrowding in Kanawha County.
